My personal synopsis:
On the fictional and magical land of Celesterra, the continents are divided. There are the humans, and then there are the fae. In Celesterra, all humans aged 21 are eligible to attend Placement Day and become auctioned off and enslaved to the immortal, intimidating, and most times, royal Fae.
Placement day quickly approaches for Asteria Zagreus, who is a mortal young woman living within the Sunset Kingdom. Asteria doesn’t have many people she will miss besides her parents. She has never let herself feel close enough to anyone. She knew that she would inevitably be shipped off to an unknown kingdom. She would become someone’s slave for the rest of her life. She is close with her parents, and her favorite person Soren. She never let her walls down completely to let anyone in too closely, which would only make the goodbye even harder when the day came. It was nearly impossible to get placed with one of your friends on Judgement day so she never let herself dwell and worry over something which she had no control over. Still, she wished she wouldn’t have to leave behind all of the people she cared for.
Asteria was claimed by the Dusk court, by Prince Cyrus Tanan himself. Once she arrived in the grand and lavish palace of Dusk Kingdom she’s in a whirlwind of emotions and fear. She is given rooms to herself and treated much better than any other slave. The shock wears off. She continues asking herself why she is getting special treatment. Slowly, she begins to realize what’s really happening. Cyrus is determined to make her completely his- mind, body and soul. He didn’t just want another slave. No, he wanted a companion. He wanted to challenge her intelligence and rage and somehow use her to his advantage. Besides, Asteria is beautiful- comparable to a fae’s beauty even. She’ll never let that happen though. She will never completely give herself over to him. Afterall, he’s a monster.
When she continues to refuse him and his desires, Asteria realizes she has only one option. She must escape her enslavement. She needs to find something thought to be completely impossible…true freedom. Asteria must begin to play her own game within the court…and with the Prince of the Dusk Kingdom himself. She keeps to her plan, only to be distracted by her run-in with a purple-eyed, stunningly handsome Fae solider who confirmed her suspicions of Prince Cyrus’ questionable behavior.
The more she learns about this new life and its rules, the more she feels rage. She strongly opposes inequality and unfairness towards humankind. The only solace she has ever had is in her dreams. There, she regularly finds peace within the darkness amongst the stars. As an impending war is seen on the horizon for the land of Celesterra, Asteria vows to make her dreams of freedom become her new reality.
But how?
This book is a whole investment, but the good kind! The tedious task of world building and character development was a huge undertaking, and it was so well done. When I was trying to get through the beginning of the book (Part One) I was thinking to myself that this book probably could have been shorter. However, once getting to the best part of the book (Part Two) I was so happy to have read all of the intricate details laid out before me as I was smiling and kicking my feet as the book really started to pick up.
Is there spice?! YES. The spice level is definitely not for the weak minded, or the weak kneed. I would consider this a slow burn to the steamy romance side of things, other than some mentions of it here and there. The slow burn really works for the way this particular story is set up though!
I absolutely loved the fact that Asteria was strong, but not too strong. She is a force to be reckoned with throughout the entire book, which other characters took notice of right away as well, and I loved that for her. She was consistent with staying witty, intelligent, strong, and lovable.
Cyrus, on the other hand, became intolerable. And as for Calix.. Well, I’ll let you read about the purple-eyed solider yourself and let me know what you think about him.
I laughed. I teared up. I smiled. I yelled at my Kindle, thew it to the other side of the couch, apologized to it, picked it back up and then kept reading.
Fans of Sarah J. Mass, Rebecca Yarros, Holly Black, Jennifer L Armentrout, Game of Thrones, and magical fantasy worlds with shapeshifters, starcrossed lovers, and fighting will want to make sure to download this book on Kindle Unlmited in time for it’s April 4th release!
I already can’t wait to get my hands on book two.
Happy reading friends.
